PE and Sports Premium
The Primary PE and Sport Premium is government funding provided to primary schools to improve the quality of physical education (PE), school sport and physical activity for all pupils.
Developing healthy, active lifestyles from an early age is an essential part of every child's education. Positive experiences of PE and sport help children build confidence, resilience, teamwork and a lifelong enjoyment of being active. Regular physical activity also supports children's physical health, mental wellbeing, behaviour and academic achievement.
The funding is ring-fenced, meaning it can only be used to improve the provision of PE, sport and physical activity within schools. School leaders decide how best to invest the funding to meet the needs of their pupils and create sustainable improvements that benefit both current and future children.
Changes for 2026–2027
The Government has announced a new direction for school sport. During the 2026–2027 academic year, schools will continue to receive PE and Sport Premium funding while preparations are made for the introduction of the new PE and School Sport Partnerships Network, which will replace the current funding model from Spring 2027.
As part of this transition:
- PE and Sport Premium funding will continue to be paid to eligible schools during 2026–2027 in two instalments, subject to the Department for Education's grant conditions.
- Schools will continue to publish an annual report showing how the funding has been spent and the impact it has had on pupils.
- Greater emphasis will be placed on creating sustainable improvements through partnership working with local organisations and School Games Organisers (SGOs), enabling schools to access high-quality competitions, festivals, workforce development and inclusive opportunities for all pupils.
- The new national model aims to strengthen links between schools, local clubs and community organisations so that children have more opportunities to be active both during and beyond the school day.
At Blackheath Primary School, we will continue to work closely with our local School Games Organiser and sports partners to provide a broad and inclusive programme of PE, physical activity and competitive sport. Alongside high-quality curriculum PE, pupils benefit from inter-school competitions, festivals, leadership opportunities, staff professional development and a wide range of extra-curricular clubs that promote healthy, active lifestyles.
